THE SPANISH OPENING - SAMPLE LESSON 1

The Spanish Opening:

The Spanish Opening belongs to the King pawn family of openings and is one of the most famous openings played on the international scene.

The chess normal opening moves are:

1.e4 e5

2.Nf3 Nc6

3.Bb5

This move (3.Bb5) by White signals that he wants to play the Spanish Opening.

Eliminating the defender:

Here Black normally plays 3....a6 chasing the bishop on b5. White can capture the knight on c6. The only defender of the e5 pawn.

3.... a6

4.Bxc6 dxc6

5.Nxe5

Black has lost a pawn, is it false or true?  Can you find a way to regain the Black pawn or is the pawn lost for good. This is a very simple idea, but could lead any beginner into a battle which he or she might not be ready for.
